How to Root and add CWM to Samsung Galaxy S2 Running Android 2.3.6 Build XWKL1 Hack

If you’ve updated your Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 with the official Samsung-released firmware for Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread build XWKL1 and have lost your root access along the way, there’s a way for you to get it back.
Firmware XWKL1 for the Galaxy S2, said to be an incremental firmware update officially from Samsung, reportedly provides better battery life than earlier firmware updates.  For this reason, many folks have updated their Galaxy S2 to the said firmware and took an extra step: rooting the phone in order to further customize it.
In this guide, you will learn how to root your Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 after updating it to firmware XWKL1 of Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread.

Requirements

• Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 with Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread firmware XWKL1 installed
• Back up all your personal phone data (e.g., contacts, SMS, files, photos, Internet settings, MMS, etc.).  Do not use Samsung KIES in creating a back-up. Your rooted phone may be incompatible with Samsung KIES.
• Charge your battery to at least 60% power (full charge recommended) to keep your device running throughout the rooting procedure.
• Disable all system tools such as Samsung KIES, firewall programs, and antivirus software. These tools might affect or hinder the rooting process on your mobile device.

Warnings

These instructions are for the Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100.  Do not try these on another variant of the Galaxy S2 (such as the GT-I9100G).
Do not attempt to use this guide if your Galaxy S2 is not running Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread firmware version XWKL1.  Otherwise, you could brick your phone.

Instructions

1. Get the XWKL1 root package from here.
2. Extract the RAR archive’s contents into a folder on your computer.  Use WinRAR or other RAR extraction software.
3. Go to the folder containing the extracted files and launch the Odin3_v1.0 program.
4. Switch off your Samsung Galaxy S2.
5. Press and hold the Volume Down key and Home button (middle key) simultaneously, while tapping the Power button to reboot your phone into Download Mode.
6. Once in download mode, connect your mobile device to the computer using USB cable.
7. Go back to Odin3 and click the “PDA” tab. From there, select the file “CF-Root-SGS2_XW_INU_KL1-v5.0-CWM5.tar” you got from the extracted files.
8. Under Option in Odin3, make sure only “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” are checked.  Leave the other options unchecked.
9. Click the “Start” button in Odin3 to begin the rooting process. This will take a few minutes.
10. When your phone has been successfully rooted, your mobile device will automatically reboot.
11. Disconnect your phone from the computer once the homescreen appears on your phone.
12. Switch off your mobile phone.
13. Reboot your mobile device into Recovery Mode by pressing the Volume Up key, Home key (middle button), and Power button simultaneously.
14. While in Recovery mode, select “Wipe data/factory reset” and confirm the action on the next screen.
15. Select “Wipe Cache partition” and confirm the action on the next screen.
16. Go back to the main menu and select “reboot system now” to restart your phone.

You have successfully rooted your Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 running firmware XWKL1 of Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread. You will also notice that ClockworkMod Recovery and Superuser app have been installed on your phone (a reliable indicator if you were successful in rooting your mobile device).

Are you itching to gain root access on your Samsung Captivate? If you’ve recently updated to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread UCKF1 firmware, rooting your Samsung Captivate is no problem at all. XDA Developers forum member designgears brings us an easy kernel-based solution. The kernel may be rather basic but it gives you root access with init.d support. The kernel is also insecure, hence running adb as root.
If you’re new to the world of rooting, have no fear. Though it may not be a one-click solution, even the most inexperienced of Android users can make this work as long as you’ve got Odin. Just follow our instructions and you’ll be set.

Caution

It’s important to note that this rooting procedure will work only for the Samsung Captivate I897. It will not work on the Samsung Captivate Glide or other phone models so please do not attempt to use this method to root incompatible phones.

Requirements

If you’re excited to gain root access to your Samsung Captivate, you’re going to need a few things:

• Samsung Captivate with Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread UCKF1 firmware
• A computer running Windows
• Make sure that your Samsung Captivate’s battery is fully charged. This prevents the phone from shutting off in the middle of the rooting process.
• Back up any important data on your phone, just in case data will be lost or corrupted during the rooting process.

Instructions

Once you have everything, you can now root your Samsung Captivate I897:

1. Download Odin3 v1.8.5 from the link above.  Save it to your computer.
2. Download the auto root kernel to your computer. See the link above.
3. Turn off your Samsung Captivate.
4. Boot your Samsung Captivate into download mode. You can do this by holding down the Volume Down key while pressing the Power button.
5. Run Odin3 on your computer.
6. Click on the PDA button in Odin3 and navigate to where the I897UCKF1 auto root kernel is located.
7. Choose the I897UCKF1 auto root kernel TAR file.
8. In the Option section, make sure only Auto Reboot and F. Reset time are checked.  The other options should not be checked.
9. Connect your phone to the computer via the USB Cable.
10. If you’ve installed all the drivers correctly, you’ll see the ID:COM section in the upper left of the Odin3 window turn bright yellow.
    • If it does not turn yellow, disconnect your phone and install the appropriate device drivers. Try again.
11. With the kernel in place, hit the START button. Odin3 will start flashing the kernel.
12. Once the kernel has finished flashing, your phone will reboot.
13. Wait for your phone to completely boot up before disconnecting it from the computer.

Your Samsung Captivate I897 is now rooted. You can now enjoy root access on your phone, as well as the possibility of flashing custom ROMs to your heart’s desire.

Update Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 to Android 2.3.6 Build XXLA6 Hacks

Applying this update is fast and easy. Even the most novice of Android users can do it.  Applying this update will not root your device in any manner, thus it will not revoke your warranty.
If you have already rooted their Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 though, the update will cause you to lose your root access and your warranty will be restored.

Requirements

If you’re getting excited to apply this update, you’ll need to quell your excitement because you’ll need a few things before you can proceed to the update process:

• Make sure to create a backup of the data on your Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000. Applying this update may corrupt or erase important information.
• Make sure that your Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000′s battery is fully charged. This will prevent the device from shutting off in the middle of the update process.
• Check if USB Debugging has been enabled on your Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000. You can do this through “Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.”

Here’s how to update your Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 to Android 2.3.6 firmware XXLA6:

1. Download the XXLA6 firmware package from the link provided above.  Save the file to your computer.
2. Extract the contents of the package into a folder on your computer. Make sure that you see “N7000XXLA6_N7000OXXLA1_N7000XXLA4_HOME.tar.md5″ among the extracted files.
3. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000.
4. On your computer, double click and launch Odin3. It’s inside the folder where you extracted the ZIP package to.
5. Boot your Samsung GT-N7000 into download mode. You can do this by pressing the Volume Down and the OK buttons while pressing the Power button.
6. Once the device is in Download Mode, connect your Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 to your computer.
7. If all the appropriate device drivers had been installed earlier, the ID:COM section of Odin3 should light up in bright yellow.
   • If the ID:COM section does not light up, disconnect the phone and go through “Settings > Wireless and Networks > USB Settings > Samsung KIES option”. Try connecting the phone again to your computer.
8. Click on the PDA button in Odin3.  In the browse dialog, select the “N7000XXLA6_N7000OXXLA1_N7000XXLA4_HOME.tar.md5″ file.
9. In the Option section in Odin3, make sure only “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” are checked.  Leave the other options not checked.
10. Click Start in the Odin3 window.
11. Your firmware will start installing and in a few minutes, it should have successfully finished.  The device will also automatically reboot.  Disconnect the Galaxy Note from the computer when the homescreen loads after rebooting.
12. Turn off your Galaxy Note again.
13. Reboot the Galaxy Note to recovery mode by holding down the Volume Up and OK buttons as you press the Power button.
14. From the recovery menu, select “Wipe data/factory reset” and confirm the operation on the next screen.
15. Select “Wipe cache partition” from the options and confirm the operation on the next screen.
16. Return to the recovery’s main menu.
17. Select “Reboot system now.”

Your Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 should reboot automatically and once you see the home screen

again, you’ll now be running on Android 2.3.6 firmware build XXLA6.

AOSP Android 4.0 ROM for Samsung Galaxy S2 – KOUD AOSP Hack

If you want to try it, just follow the simple steps below.

Note:

• Make sure that your device battery is charge at least 60%
• Backup your device data into your computer.
• Turn on USB Debugging, on your homescreen tap Menu> Settings> Application> Development. Then, make sure that USB debugging is checked.

Requirements:

• Samsung Galaxy S2 with CWM recovery
• USB Data Cable
• Computer

1. First, download the koud-AOSP-4.0.3_v21.03.12.zip file on your computer.
2. Then, connect your device to the computer using your USB Data Cable.
3. Next, copy the zip file you downloaded earlier to the root directory of your SD card.
4. Disconnect your device to the computer.
5. turn off your device.
6. Go to Clockworkmod recovery.Press and hold the Volume UP+Home+Power. Phone will boot into CWM recovery.
7. Once you’re in the recovery, do a nandroid backup by selecting backup> backup and restore> then backup to start saving your old ROM. (This will make a full backup of your existing ROM, and save it to the SD card. You can restore from this backup, if something gets messed up with the installation.)
8. Now do a full wipe by selecting Mount and Storage then wipe the following:
   • Format System
   • Format Data
   • Format Cache
   • Go back to main menu and select advance then wipe dalvik-cache.
9. From the main menu select install zip from Sd card> choose zip from Sd card>then select the koud-AOSP-4.0.3_v21.03.12.zip to start flashing the AOSP ROM (ICS).
10. Go back to main menu and select Reboot System now.

You have successfully updated your phone to AOKP ROM, to install the Google apps, just follow the simple steps below.

1. Download the gapps-ics-20120224-signed.zip on your computer.
2. Then, connect your phone to the computer using your USB Data Cable
3. Next, copy the gapps-ics-20120224-signed.zip to the root directory of your SD card.
4. Disconnect your phone to the computer.
5. Turn off your phone.
6. Go to recovery mode.
7. From the recovery main menu select install zip from Sd card> choose zip from Sd card> then select the gapps-ics-20120224-signed.zip to start flashing the Google Apps.
8. Go back to main menu and select Reboot System now.

You have successfully flashed the AOSP ROM on your Samsung Galaxy S2.
